A lot of epic and theatrical sounding black metal has to navigate the possibility of sacrificing some of it's vitriolic edge for the sake of creating a soaring atmosphere, or worse still it runs the risk of having a somewhat sterilised and cleaner quality of sound. Whilst neither is inherently a bad thing, it's a real treat to hear an album so simultaneously majestic and decrepit. Track four is fucking great! Ben Harris

"Raw" Black Metal from Norway. There is Black Metal, then there is Raw Black Metal and then there is this. I would call this super-Raw BM, the kind you get in totally uncooked meat & almost gaping open wound sort of raw. Extremely nicely done with excruciatingly piercing moments. AND, it is a debut!!! Can you believe it? This also means I get to look forward to more! No faves & highly recommended! bmurator

Beautifully evokes the quiet at the end of the battle, as the wounded lie softly groaning, the living clean and sharpen their swords, and the ravens flutter down to feast. Then the drums and horns rouse the warriors to their task, some chanting and screaming to fan the battle frenzy, and others donning their still-bloody bear-sarks. Ah, the glory—to hold one’s sword aloft, to test oneself against the enemy, and finally to lie in a puddle of one’s own spouting gore. Dave Aftandilian
